Chengdu-Chongqing Railway, the first railway since the founding of the People's Republic of China, opened on July 1, 1952.

The 505-kilometer railway was completely designed and constructed by China, and all construction materials were domestically produced.

Many Chinese central SOEs including China Railway Group Limited, China Railway Construction Corporation Limited and China Communications Construction Company Limited participated in its construction.

The railway made it easier for people in China's Southwest regions to travel and obtained the special prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Awards. It was selected by the UN as one of the three wonders symbolizing man's conquering of nature in the 20th century.

Ten military industrial corporations were launched on the basis of five original national administrative industrial enterprises on July 1, 1999.

The ten companies were: China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), China Nuclear Engineering & Construction Corporation Limited (currently a subsidiary of CNNC), China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation Limited (CASIC), China Aviation Industry Corporation I and China Aviation Industry Corporation II (the two enterprises are now merged into Aviation Industry Corporation, Ltd), China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC), China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), China North Industries Group Corporation Limited (Norinco Group) and China South Industries Group Corporation (CSGC).
