Fengyun-3 (FY-3), China's first new generation polar-orbiting meteorological satellite, was launched on May 27, 2008.

The satellite was developed by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation and the capabilities of the more than ten detecting instruments aboard can equal or better those of the same kinds developed by the United States.

The launch and operation of the FY-3 was a breakthrough and systemic improvement in China's meteorological research into climate change and related issues.

The FY-3A is currently listed among the world's satellite constellations for earth observation and has undertaken continuous all-weather multi-dimensional observation of the earth's atmosphere, ocean and land surface with the European satellite Metop and the US' NPOESS.
