Construction of the Guanting Reservoir, the first large-scale reservoir since the founding of the People's Republic of China, was completed on May 13, 1954.
The reservoir, built by Power Construction Corporation of China, covers 230 sq km and can store a total of 2.2 billion cubic meters of water.
Located at the border of Huailai, Hebei province and Yanqing district, Beijing, it contains two sections - the Yongding River reservoir and the Guishui River reservoir.
It was a mass control project to prevent flow of silt from the upstream Yongding River during the flood season.
The reservoir is a main water source for the capital city and plays a role in terms of flood control, power generation and irrigation.
