China Energy Supports China's Poverty Alleviation Campaign

Updated: 2020-05-11

Qumalai county in Northwest China's Qinghai province was de-listed from the poverty-stricken areas in China, the provincial government announced on April 21.

It is another targeted poverty alleviation county to escape poverty through the support of China Energy Investment Corporation (China Energy), following Gangcha county of Qinghai's Haibei Tibetan autonomous prefecture.

Located in Southwest Qinghai's YushuTibet autonomous prefecture, Qumalai lies in the core area of the Sanjiangyuan National Park and the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve and has some of the most varied creatures, species, genes and relics as well as natural landscapes in the world.

It is also one of the most primitive areas with the most fragile ecological system in China.

At an altitude of 4,500 meters, the county is the main water conservation region of the Yellow River and the Yangtze River, two main water systems in North and South China.

Covering 52,400 square kilometers, it has a population of 46,000, 98 percent of which is Tibetan.

Because of the extremely cold weather and the high altitude, the county has poor infrastructure and slow social and economic development. Most shepherds there have low levels of education and lack labor skills, making it hard for them to escape poverty relying on themselves.

China Energy shouldered the precise poverty alleviation mission of Qumalai in 2010 and promoted relevant projects in ecological protection, education and skill training, e-commerce, industry development and medical support.

By the end of March 2020, China Energy had sent six employees to the county and invested about 69.94 million yuan ($9.89 million) in environmental improvements in the Yellow River source region. It had also constructed teaching buildings and dorms and poverty-alleviation projects including dorms for orphans, an entrepreneurship center and infrastructure facilities and engaged in technical training.

The company will invest another 47 million yuan in poverty alleviation and continue to push forward on major projects.
