Greenhouses Promote Agriculture Development in Poverty-Stricken Areas

Updated: 2020-05-11

In the 20 greenhouses in Chuankou village of Chashang county in Shaanxi province, vegetables were eagerly sprouting in April.

The greenhouses were invested and built by China Energy Investment Corporation (China Energy) in 2018.

That year, a total of 2.15 million yuan ($303,565.13) was invested in developing the cooperative economy in the village, which included construction of the greenhouses as well as a reservoir which can impound as much as 80 tons of water.

According to the company, varieties of organic vegetables including tomatoes, eggplants, summer squashes, cucumbers, peppers, celeries and gingers are planted in the greenhouses, which can create net income of 300,000 yuan annually, benefitting 200 people from 86 poverty-stricken households.

Vegetables and gingers grown in the greenhouses are expected to bring in 100,000 yuan this year.

In addition to developing agriculture, improving local employment is also a key to poverty alleviation. More than 30 villagers are now working at the greenhouses.

Technical instructors are also teaching villagers how to plant ginger.

It is now the spring ploughing season, and villagers are busying planting, watering and fertilizing in the greenhouses, looking forward to a rich harvest.
