Construction of the Fuqing 5 generator, known as the Hualong One modular power generator and the first project to demonstrate China's self-developed third generation nuclear power technology, began on May 7, 2015.

It marked China had become the fourth country with independent nuclear technology after the US, France and Russia.

The new generator was also a signal that China had joined the first echelon of global nuclear power technology.

Hualong One was an advanced million-kilowatt class pressurized water reactor (PWR) nuclear power facility developed by China National Nuclear Corporation and China General Nuclear Power Corporation under the latest Chinese and international security requirements.

Many other Chinese central SOEs including Dongfang Electric Corporation, Harbin Electric Corporation, China Communications Construction Company Limited and China Energy Engineering Group Co Ltd. took part in its successful development.
