The impounding height of the sluice of the Jatigede dam project in Indonesia reached 260 meters on April 13, normal for the dam's reservoir capacity of 980 million cubic meters and confirmation that the project is ready for operation.
Contracted by Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA), the dam is an iconic project of infrastructure construction cooperation between China and Indonesia and was invested by Chinese enterprises and built to Chinese standards.
Equipment used during the construction was also developed and manufactured in China.
The dam started sluicing in 2015 but the water height never reached 260 meters as it was impacted by upstream land acquisition and traffic bridge construction. Therefore, at that time it couldn't play a full role in agricultural irrigation, flood control and the fishery industry.
According to the contractor, the dam can help prevent strong floods within 750 square kilometers in the downstream region and can now supply enough water for irrigation of 90,000 hectares, which will benefit 4.8 million local people and promote social and economic development in affected areas.
