The construction of Najin Hydropower Station in Lhasa, the first hydropower plant in the Tibet autonomous region since the founding of the People's Republic of China, was completed on April 19, 1960.
The station featured six generators and a total 7,500 megawatts capacity. Its establishment enabled Tibetans to use electric lamps and was the start of Tibet's electric power industry.
A song popular after the station was built described the view of electric posts standing in the streets and all houses having lights at night, conveying local people's happiness to have access to electricity.

China launched its first transmission 3D cartographic satellite and its first nano satellite from Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Southwest Sichuan province on April 19, 2004.
TS-1, China's first transmission 3D cartographic satellite, and Naxing-1, the first nano satellite independently developed by China, were successfully launched by the Long March 2C carrier rocket developed by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, marking that China had broken through in micro-satellite technological research.
