World's Largest Individual Land Wind Farm Starts Construction

Updated: 2020-04-17

Construction of State Power Investment Corporation Limited (SPIC)'s six million kW wind farm demonstration base and supporting facility in Ulaanqab, North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region started on April 10.

It is the SPIC's first iconic demonstration project in Inner Mongolia and plays a significant role in creation of a clean energy production base in the region.

A major demonstration project to promote China's energy transformation and upgrading, the base is the first large-scale provider of renewable energy to the power grid with fair prices in the country and currently the largest-scaled individual land wind farm in the world.

Located in Siziwang Banner of Ulaanqab, the project covers 2,072 square kilometers and has an investment of 40 billion yuan ($5.65 billion).

The technologies it uses include the most advanced high-resolution global climate model, 5G communication and inspection robots.

Geological conditions were also considered to optimize the layout of the wind blowers which have an average installed capacity of 4.16 MW.

Operated with a fault rate lower than 0.5 percent and requiring 50 percent fewer workers, the machines will take the country's land wind farm generator units into the 4 MW era.

The base is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs, drive development of local tourism and animal husbandry and integrate stock raising, industry and service to promote regional economic growth.

The project is scheduled to be completed and go into service by the end of 2020. In 2021, the base will start to transmit clean power to Beijing and Tianjin as well as Tangshan of Hebei province in an amount equal to that generated by six million tons of standard coal.

It's worth mentioning that the project is intended to evolve into a world leading wind farm noted for layout, design, equipment, engineering, operation and maintenance as well as achievement.

The wind farm, as a major cross-regional energy outbound project, has been selected into the National Energy Administration's main frame in 2020.
