Wu Yong: Enriching Villagers' Material, Spiritual Lives

Updated: 2020-04-16

Wu Yong, an engineering manager at China Railway 14th Bureau Group Co., Ltd. , was dispatched to Yuncheng county, Heze of Shandong province to help the villagers escape poverty.

In early 2018, he stepped into Nanlilou village of Zhangluji town in Yuncheng.

The only things he could see were the barren land as well as seniors and left-behind children; there were no decent industries or resources.

Wu spent his first day wandering in the village, observing every corner. The villagers were also observing him, wondering what he could bring to the village.

The first thing Wu determined to do was to renovate the roads which were covered with loess and sand.

He initiated a donation in his company and used the funds to consolidate the road and installed dozens of road lamps at the crossings, which won the villagers' trust.

Later, he built up a breeding cooperative, a small hardware factory and a pickle plant in the village which gradually developed and brought villagers greater and greater income.

For the two years Wu worked there he helped the village raise more than seven million yuan, built five workshops and promoted eight special industrial projects for poverty alleviation, which effectively widened villagers' income channels.

In addition, he also helped build new schools, agricultural science reading rooms and a cultural activity square to enrich the residents' lives.

Now, he has left the village and returned to his original position, buried in steel and concrete every day. However, he often recalls the days when he was in the village, working and helping the villagers.

He said that he will go back to the village to see his old friends when time permits.
