China National Nuclear Power Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) in Hainan province, recently purchased honey dew melons grown in a nearby village to help increase their sales.
It was just the beginning of harvest season for fruit growers in Hainan at the time of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020.
As a result of the pandemic, most of the fruit piled up.
In Wuda village in Haiwei town of Hainan, villagers were anxious about the unsalable honey dew melons which they could neither eat by themselves nor transport for sale.
A neighbor of the village, China National Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. visited the village immediately after learning of the dilemma and encouraged its employees to buy the melons.
In addition to the more than 1,500 kg the staff members bought, the company also purchased over 4,200 kg of melons to inspire the outstanding workers to stick to their posts during the pandemic outbreak.
Similar steps were taken to deal with other unsalable fruits including watermelons and mangoes in Lingshui and pineapples in Changjiang.
By March 30, the company had purchased nearly 10,000 kg of watermelons, more than 750 kg of mangoes and 550 kg of pineapples.
At the same time as it fulfills its social duties, the company will continue to guarantee stable operation of the nuclear power generator units to contribute to local development.
