China's First Open-Typed TBM Exported to South America Shipped

Updated: 2020-04-07

The first open-typed tunnel boring machine (TBM) China ever exported to South America was shipped on March 26 from Changsha, Central China's Hunan province.

It will be transferred at Shanghai for shipment to Peru for use in tunnel construction of that country's San Gaban Hydroelectric Power Plant project in Puno.

Jointly developed by China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corporation Limited (CRCHI) and China International Water and Electric Corporation (CWE), the 245-meter TBM has a 5.83-meter diameter cutter and integrates varieties of techniques in mechanics, electrification, hydraulic, sensor and information technology.

Equipped with jacks on both sides, the machine has a strong rock breaking and digging capacity and can work in middle and strong-rock strata with high speed and efficiency.

The cutter is also installed with a braking system which guarantees operators' safety.

Located at San Gaban district of Carabaya in Puno, the San Gaban Hydroelectric Power Plant is an iconic project of the Belt and Road Initiative in South America and the first power program in which a Chinese enterprise invested on that continent.

An EPC project contracted by CWE, it will enhance the quality of China-Peru cooperation in trade and economy.

With a total installed capacity of 209.3 MW, the plant has a designed annual power output of 1.25 billion kWh.

As a clean energy project, it is expected to reduce emission of 338,000 tons of carbon dioxide and a large amount of waste gas and pollutants annually upon completion, which will greatly promote optimum allocation of water resources and sustainable development in South America.
