Asiasat 1 was launched successfully by a China-made Long March 3 rocket on April 7, 1990, making China the third country to have realized space industry commercialization after the US and France.

The satellite, developed by Hughes Aircraft based in the US, greatly promoted the development of the broadcasting and satellite communication industries in Asian countries.

It was the first time China offered commercial launching service since the Long March 2 and 3, made by teams from China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, entered the international market.
