Key Cable-Stayed Bridge of Nansha Port Railway Completed

Updated: 2020-03-26

The No. 157 main tower of the Nansha Port railway project's cable-stayed bridge was capped on March 18, marked a critical progress of it.

Contracted by First Engineering Ltd. of China Railway 11th Bureau Group, a subsidiary of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (CRCC), the bridge over the Xijiang River, a main tributary of the Pearl River, is a main section of the Nansha Port railway.

Located at the border between Foshan and Jiangmen in South China's Guangdong province, the 1,117.5-meter bridge has a main span of 600 meters.

With a steel box-concrete mixed double-girder structure, it features two H-shaped towers, 200-meter and 208-meter respectively.

The bridge consists of 96 pairs of stayed cable, which was a difficult part of construction.

During the engineering, builders adopted BIM technology to buffer crashes between reinforcing steel bars.

They also overcame difficulties such as building and engineering the steel trestles of a large-diameter deepwater pile foundation amid rapids and in complicated geological conditions.

As for the Nansha Port railway, it is the first freight railway to expand into the Nansha Free Trade Zone.

A major part of the western freight transport passage of the Pearl River Delta, the railway is a key channel to connect cities in the western region of the delta with those in inland regions.

With a total length of 88.06 kilometers, the national Class I double-lane railway runs through four cities in Guangdong, namely Jiangmen, Zhongshan, Foshan and Guangzhou.

Upon completion, direct transport of container freight to Europe and a railway-sea joint transport mode will be available to lower transport costs and improve competitiveness of local enterprises and regional economies.

Construction of a free trade zone will also promote the coordinated development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and improve the role of Guangzhou as a shipment hub.
