The first national power planning project under the Belt and Road Initiative passed acceptance on Mar 14, 2018. The project was undertaken by the China Electric Planning and Engineering Institute subordinated to Energy China.

The report of the project outlined the basic foundation of Laos' development of its energy and power industry, analyzing the country's future electricity market growth and demands for electricity.

It detailed short, medium and long-term plans for Lao power supply and power grid construction, along with a plan for connecting with surrounding countries.

The report is expected to become an important reference for Laos electrical industry development and promote the strategic partnership between Laos and China in electrical power.
