The Shenzhou V spacecraft was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Northwest China's Gansu Province at 9 am on Oct 15, 2003, carrying China's first astronaut, Yang Liwei.

The success of the manned space flight was a milestone in China's space development and proof that China had become one of the countries to master complete manned space technology.
