Dongfeng, the first 10,000-ton ocean-going ship completely developed, designed and built by China, was completed on Jan 8, 1968.
A result of many companies' cooperation, the ship was mainly constructed by Jiangnan Shipyard.
Its high-strength low-carbon alloy steel was produced by Ansteel Group and the main marine engine was China's first trial 8,820-horsepower diesel engine manufactured by Hudong Shipyard.
In addition, the electric gyrocompass of the ship, made by Shanghai marine instrument factory, was also a first trial production in China.
Completion of the ship laid a foundation for mass construction of future large-scale ships.
Second Automobile Works Co. completed on Jan 8, 1986
Second Automobile Works Co., the predecessor of Dongfeng Motor Corporation and the second largest automobile industrial base in China, was completed on Jan 8, 1986.
Construction of the base started in September 1969 in Shiyan, Central China's Hubei Province and the project later evolved into the country's second large-scale modern automobile manufacturer.
Military vehicles manufactured by the factory had excellent performances and were titled "meritorious vehicles" and "hero vehicles" by the People's Liberation Army.
The company's self-developed military vehicles Mengshi, also known as "strong brave warrior", contributed to the leapfrog development of the country's army.
