China Shenhua Contributes to Indonesia's Largest-capacity Thermal Power Project

Updated: 2019-12-19

The operation certificate and the handover letter of the No. 1 generator unit of the Java 7 coal-fired power generation project in Indonesia were signed on Dec 13.

The unit, with proprietary intellectual property rights, has the largest individual installed capacity of any overseas thermal generation unit invested and built by a Chinese enterprise.

Its handover procedures indicated that the high-efficient environmental protection power station with the most installed capacity, highest parameter, the most advanced technology and the best indexes in the country was available for service.

Located in Banten, the Island of Java, the Java 7 project is about 100 kilometers from Jakarta, capital of Indonesia, and has a gross installed capacity of 2×1050MW.

Valued at 12 billion yuan ($1.71 billion), the project was contracted by PT Shenhua Guohua Pembangkitan Jawa Bali (PT SGPJB) which is a joint venture between China Shenhua Energy Company Limited (China Shenhua) and PT Pembangkitan Jawa Bali (PJB) — a subsidiary of Indonesia's state-owned electricity firm Perusahaan Listrik Negara, with construction guided by China Shenhua.

With the longest designed annual utilization time of its kind in Indonesia, the project also has the world's largest lignite fired boiler and medium speed mill for use in power plants.

What's more, an electric generator and a three-phase compact transformer, both with the world's largest capacity as well as the largest paired primary air fan with a supporting power of 4,600KW, were installed in the project.

It is estimated that about 15 billion kWh of electricity will be produced annually when the entire project goes into operation, which will improve the current power supply situation in the country and greatly relieve power shortages in Java.

The project will also contribute to local economic growth and social development.

The cumulative tax during the construction period was about $110 million and more than 3,000 local people were recruited. It is predicted that about $40 million of annual tax will be paid when the project starts service and generates employment for nearly 700 people.

A result of the Belt and Road Initiative, the project is also a major part of Indonesia's Global Maritime Axis initiative. It is a China-developed large-scale thermal power generation project intended to go global and be a model in power engineering design, equipment manufacturing and engineering construction as well as management and operation.

The Java 7 project was the second by China Shenhua constructed in Indonesia. Since its beginning the company shouldered social responsibilities and pushed forward cultural exchange between the two countries.

The company helped clean rivers and build mosques near the construction site and visited local people to build a closer relationship.

In addition, environmental protection and ecological construction were closely taken care of. For example, the coverage rate of the mangrove forest along the seaside improved by over 30 percent during construction.

The No. 2 generator unit is to be into operation soon.
