The two sections of the Moracica Bridge in Montenegro, part of the Montenegro North-South Expressway, were joined on Oct 11.
The highway is designed by CCCC Highway Consultants Co., Ltd. and is being constructed by CCCC Second Harbour Engineering Company Ltd. It is contracted by China Road & Bridge Corporation. All three companies are subsidiaries of China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC).
The Montenegro North-South Expressway, dubbed the country's "century project", is about 180 kilometers and connects with Serbia's E763 expressway which is still under construction.
The 960-meter long and 23.4-meter wide bridge has a prestressed concrete continuous rigid frame.
It has a highest pier of 161 meters and six spans of up to 190 meters, and ranks third among bridges of its kind in Europe and 11th in the world.
Prime Minister of Montenegro Duško Marković, Minister of Transport and Maritime Affairs Osman Nurkovic and China's Ambassador to Montenegro Liu Jin attended the closure ceremony.
Marković said that the Moracica Bridge was the most difficult-to-build bridge in the country and had the highest investment. It is an important project to the country.
He also expressed his wish that the bridge can be completed in March 2020 and could open to traffic in September of that year.
The bridge is a reflection of the construction capacity of the Chinese companies and proof that Montenegro has the ability to develop large-scale infrastructure.
According to the company, the project is a result of the "17+1 cooperation" -- a mechanism between China and Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC) -- and is an icon of China-Montenegro economic and trade cooperation.
