The solar power station with a horse-shaped look at the Kubuqi Desert in Dalate Banner, Ordos, Inner Mongolia, was approved by the Guinness World Record (GWR) as the world's largest photovoltaic (PV) power station with image-shaped panels on July 9, 2019.
The station was included in Guinness' special publication: China Pride - In Celebration of the 70th Anniversary of New China.
Constructed by China Energy Engineering Group Jiangsu No.1 Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Group Co., Ltd., the station is the No.4 power station project of the Dalate PV application base.
The 200-megawatt station has a total of 709,520 PV panels, covering an area of about 5.51 sq km. It went into operation on Dec 10, 2018.
The horse-shaped part consists of 196,320 solar panels, occupying nearly 1.4 sq km.
The project is intended to realize an economic and ecological win-win situation through the integrated mode of "PV power generation plus ecological agriculture and forestry".
It means that through the project, goals of desertification control and development of renewable energy utilization like PV power generation can be achieved at the same time.
For example, while constructing the station, the company also practiced the green development concept, planting plants such as Elaeagnus angustifolia and salix mongolica in the project's open spaces.
By adopting the new industrial recycling mode of "on-board power generation, under-board repairment, inter-board tree planting", the project is of great significance for the development of clean energy and the promotion of regional economic construction through wind prevention and sand storm resistance, as well as prevention of soil erosion, effectively curbing expansion of the Kubuqi Desert.
