World's First 200kV HVDC Breaker Passes Test

Updated: 2019-06-03

The direct current breaker at the Zhouding converter station passed the first short circuit test on May 20.

Being the first 200kV high voltage direct current (HVDC) breaker in the world to pass such tests, the technology and skills will contribute to future DC short circuit research.

It was a bipolar short circuit test conducted on the basis of traditional mono-pole grounded short circuit tests and was the first time unmanned aerial vehicles were used in the procedure.

The test showed the DC breaker's performance under all kinds of short-circuit malfunctions, indicating that the high voltage DC switching technology has matured.

The 200 kV HVDC breaker started its service in the Zhoushan Wuduan voltage source converter (VSC) based HVDC project at the end of 2016, and was then the first of its kind being used in engineering constructions in the world.

The breaker conquered the difficulty of HVDC's limit in fast switching and was a breakthrough in the independent development and manufacturing of HVDC's core equipment.

The short circuit test was conducted by State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Co., Ltd. after two years of operation of the DC breaker. The test team consisted of experts from many other enterprises, colleges and scientific and research institutes.

Complete standards and technical specifications, applicable and risk control plans and the previews of the test were made and staff members were positioned to lower the impact of the test on the surroundings.

The test verified the HVDC breaker's switch function and the coordination of the DC breaker and converter valve at the Zhoushan VSC project. Data and indexes under various DC-side short circuit malfunctions were collected for future DC-side short circuit testing.
