Bringing water to Lebanon's capital

Beirut, capital of Lebanon, faced the problem of lack of running water for years. On the roof of every household, there were many large water tanks to store water for daily use.

The water stored was all barreled water delivered from other places. Local people also had to buy drinking water which costs about 25,000 ($16.6) to 50,000 Lebanese pounds per case.

Each month, one-third of the local people's incomes were used to buy water.

To solve the problem, China Railway Group Limited (CREC) independently developed a special rock tunnel boring machine and completed a 22-kilometer diversion project. Beirut's people now have access to running water and no longer need to use barreled or bottled water.
