Two China-contracted Stadiums Selected as World Top Sports Sites

Updated: 2019-04-02

Two China-contracted sports centers were recently listed as World Top 10 Stadiums in 2018 by StadiumDB, an online football stadium database.

Three aspects — value of the architecture, function and innovation -- were under consideration in the expert assessment.

The Suzhou Olympic Sports Center was contracted by China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Co., Ltd. and has a steel structure made and installed by China Construction Steel Structure Corp. Ltd. It ranks second on the list.

Its roof spans 260 meters. The stadium is China's first to use a mono-layer cable net membrane structure and has the longest-spanning roof structure in the world.

The joint bearing of the V-shaped steel column base is like a human joint and can moves flexibly and multi-directionally. They are the first such joints in China.

Many other advanced construction technologies were adopted for the stadium, including an 800-meter concrete prestressed cantilever, a buckling restrained brace and a steel-reinforced concrete column.

Another China-made stadium listed was the Zaozhuang Sports Center, which was contracted by the First Company of China Eighth Engineering Division Ltd. It ranked fourth.

The sports center covers 54,000 sq m, with an oval-shaped in plain view and a saddle-shaped vertical face. The center can hold as many as 30,000 people and is able to host provincial comprehensive competitions and national individual sports events.

A large arc-shaped steel structure and large span membrane net structure were used in the stadium's construction and have been proved to meet internationally advanced standards. The center is a successful example for later projects.
