China builds new intelligent power generation system at South Pole

Updated: 2019-03-22

China's first complete intelligent wind-solar fuel storage microgrid power generation system catering to the local environment at the South Pole was recently put into operation at Taishan Station, according to China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC).

The power generation system, applying a customized draught fan and a photovoltaic and energy storage battery, is able to adapt to the environment of the South Pole which is cold, blustery, high-altitude and high-pressure. A control terminal has been set up to provide intelligent control to the whole system.

The system, using wind and solar power, now provides stable electricity to equipment at the Taishan Station when the Antarctic expedition leaves the station in winter and sends real-time running status through an interior network back to China.

Using local energy to generate power and circulating the use of energy will be the development trend in China's scientific research at the South Pole. With the operation of this new power generation system, the energy utilization of the country's Antarctic expedition is expected to be greener, more efficient and sustainable.
