PowerChina to build largest hydropower station in OMVS

Power Construction Corp of China, or PowerChina, has signed an engineering procurement construction (EPC) contract to build the the Koukoutamba hydroelectric project with Organisation pour la mise en valeur du fleuve Sénégal (OMVS) in Conakry, capital of Guinea.

The project will be the largest hydropower station in the OMVS since its establishment in 1972. Located in the central area of Guinea, the station will have an installed gross capacity of more than 294 megawatts. It will take 49 months to complete the project, after which it will have an annual electricity generation of 888 GWh.

The project will play a positive role in promoting the economic and social development of countries in the OMVS including Mali, Guinea, Senegal and Mauritania as well as West Africa. It is expected to interconnect power grids in West Africa, optimize the structure for energy resources, improve energy security and efficiency and boost the industrial development of the countries involved.
