Tibet welcomes first 5G base station

Updated: 2019-03-07

The first 5G base station in Southwest China's Tibet autonomous region recently opened in Lhasa, the region's capital.

The network, based on the 2.6 GHz frequency range run by China Mobile, the country's largest telecom carrier, has a peak download speed of 530 megabytes per second and an average speed of 500 megabytes per second outdoors, allowing people to download a 1-gigabyte film in only two seconds.

The construction of 5G networks is expected to bring great changes to communication. It will not only drive the upgrade of mobile internet speed but also lead to innovations in the internet of things (IoT) and the"internet of everything".

The launching of the first 5G base station has also laid a technological foundation for large-scale network testing in the near future.

Tests on the application of 5G in Tibet will be accelerated to help the region develop IoT industries in fields such as big data, tourism and public security.

Efforts will also be made in network infrastructure construction in Tibet to allow people living in remote farming and pastoral areas to have the same high-quality access to modern information and communication services as those living in Eastern China.
