Main body of Kalu Ganga dam project in Sri Lanka completes

Updated: 2019-01-21

A completion ceremony for the main body of the Kalu Ganga dam project, built by PowerChina, one of China's central SOEs, was held on Jan 8, Sri Lanka time.

After 53 months of hard work the major livelihood project of the Southeast Asian country is able to reserve water and irrigate farmlands. It will greatly benefit Sri Lanka's society and economy.

The project will supply water to the Moragahakanda reservoir to ensure power generation, and improve irrigation from the Mahaweli River to enlarge farmland areas. It will also supply more water for industrial development in central, northern and eastern Sri Lanka.

PowerChina won recognition from local residents and government as it contributed to the welfare of Pallegama's residents who lived in the reservoir area and were stricken by financial burdens. In addition, the China's central SOE created a lot of job opportunities for locals and gave them technical training which has greatly driven local economic development and bettered people's livelihoods.

The project is another good example of China's central SOEs implementing the Belt and Road Initiative.
