CSCEC's Chola Mountain Tunnel wins ITA Award

Updated: 2018-11-15

On Nov 7, the International Tunneling Association (ITA) announced the winning 2018 Project of the Year. Chola Mountain Tunnel, constructed by China Construction Fifth Engineering Division, a subsidiary of China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd (CSCEC), won the award.

The tunnel, with a total length of 7,079 meters, is the world's highest super-long highway tunnel at an average altitude of 4,378 m above sea level.

Engineers for the design and construction of the project had to overcome the technical challenges associated with construction at high elevation and in cold climate conditions, which was highly appreciated by the international judges.

ITA is an international non-governmental organization in tunnel engineering and related academic fields. ITA awards are the "Oscars" of tunneling. Their winners are selected every year for the purpose of promoting innovation and development of the construction of tunnels and underground spaces around the world.
