Xiao Yaqing meets with Peter Bakker, President & CEO of

World Business Council for Sustainable Development

On June 8, 2017, SASAC Chairman Xiao Yaqing met with Peter Bakker, President & CEO of World Business Council for Sustainable Development(WBCSD).

Xiao Yaqing expressed his welcome to Peter Bakker. He said that the notion on ecological civilization proposed by President Xi Jinping that “green mountains and clear water are as good as mountains of gold and silver” is a major contribution China has made to global sustainable development. In recent years, sustainable development has become the consensus of all walks of life in China. Chinese enterprises, especially SOEs, actively fufil the new development notion and have made remarkable achievements in addressing climate change, adjusting energy structure, developing wind, solar, hydro and other clean energy, and innovating and applying energy conservation technologies. SASAC encourages central SOEs to introduce the new development notion into their business operation and take initiative to fufil corporate social responsibility. Central SOEs and WBCSD can work with and support each other in introducing advanced development ideas and practices as well as presenting good cases in sustainable development and corporate social responsibility. Xiao Yaqing pointed out that according to the principle of common but differentiated responsibility of the Paris Agreement, a major accomplishment attributed to the world’s joint efforts to deal with climate change, countries that emit more carbon should take a lead in shouldering international responsibilities. As a major developing country, China is determined to safeguard the progress in combating climate change and promote green, low-carbon and sustainable development of the world despite the fact that reducing emission will incur higher cost associated with development.

Peter Bakker appreciated SASAC’s support for WBCSD over the years. He said that in the current time of great change, China behaves in a responsive and responsible way, leaving a deep impression on goverments and peoples in the world. President Xi Jinping’s keynote speech in Davos earlier this year on China’s economy and globalization gave the world firm confidence on China’s future. Chinese central SOEs’ efforts in sustainable development are farsighted and pioneering. WBCSD would like to work with Chinese central SOEs and large multinational companies, further communicate in areas such as energy, city and transportation, food and agriculture, and corporate social responsibility, and deepen cooperation in jointly identifying solutions for sustainable development. Peter Bakker also briefed on the We Are Still In campaign in the US, in which an increasing number of state and city governments, universities and businesses proclaimed that they will continue to abide by the Paris Agreement by action.
