Construction of the southern section of China-Russia East natural gas pipeline in East China's Jiangsu Province started on Jan 6.
The southern section, linking Hebei Province and Shanghai, is 1,509 kilometers long and is scheduled to open for operation in 2025.
The section passes regions with intense population and rich water systems as well as cultural relics, making the construction difficult and complicated.
PipeChina, contractor of the project, adopted special excavation measures to protect the environment while guaranteeing engineering progress and quality.
What's more, a remote operation and management system will be used in the construction of the southern section, which includes development of the digital design, digital purchase, smart construction site and digital twins.
Upon completion, natural gas from Russia will be transferred to Shanghai through the pipeline. Meanwhile, the natural gas pipeline will be connected with pipelines in Northeast, North and East China, reaching a daily gas transmission capacity of 50 million cubic meters, three times more than the current capacity.
Starting from Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, construction of the 5,111-kilometer China-Russia East natural gas pipeline includes three parts.
The northern section from Heilongjiang to Jilin Province and the middle section between Jilin and Hebei Province went into operation in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
The China-Russia East natural gas pipeline will be able to transfer 38 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Russia annually, and is expected to eliminate more than 100 million tons of carbon dioxide, 1.82 million tons of sulfur dioxide, 460,000 tons of nitrogen oxide and 840,000 tons of dust.
The pipeline project will contribute to China's clean energy supply, improve the air environment and realize sustainable social and economic development.
