World's First 1 Million KW Hydropower Generator Unit's Runner Hoisted

Updated: 2020-06-30

The runner of the No. 1 generator unit on the left bank of Baihetan Hydropower Station, the world's second-largest hydropower project, was hoisted by a 1,300-ton overhead crane on June 21.

Contracted by Dongfang Electric Corporation (DEC), the hoisting was the first key step of the generator unit's installation in 2020.

It demonstrated that DEC, as well as other central SOEs, is making great efforts to construct main equipment at the same time that it contributes to pandemic prevention and control and promotion of economic and social development.

Located on the border of Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, Baihetan Hydropower Station is a milestone and an iconic project in the world's hydropower field.

It is expected that the station can produce about 62.44 billion kWh of power annually, equaling that produced by about 19.68 million tons of standard coal. Its operation will eliminate emissions of about 51.6 million tons of carbon dioxide, 170,000 tons of sulfur dioxide and about 150,000 tons of oxynitride each year.

With a total installed capacity of 16 million kW, Baihetan Hydropower Station has eight 1 million kW hydropower generator units on each bank – the left and right.

Development of all the eight units on the left bank is contracted by DEC.

A runner to a hydropower generator unit is what a heart is to a person. It is the most difficult and complicated component and the core of the generator unit.

The runner hoisted on June 21 has an 8.62-meter diameter and is 3.92 meters high. With a total weight of nearly 350 tons, the machine consists of upper crowns, bands and 15 11-ton blades.

It is estimated that about 150 kWh of electricity is produced with each turn of the runner. As the runner can take 111 turns every minute, it means that the generator unit can produce about 3.9 billion kWh of power annually.

During development of the 1 million core runner hydraulic technology, DEC found the best match between strength and hydraulic performance in the flow passage component.

The efficiency of the model runner reaches 96 percent and the stability indices including cavitation, pressure pulsation, noise and runaway speed all reached internationally advanced levels, meaning the runner's operation is highly-efficient, safe and stable.

So far, DEC has produced four runners for the station.
