POWERCHINA-Contracted Hydropower Renovation Project Ready for Operation

Updated: 2020-03-30

The first generator unit of the renovation project of three hydropower plants in Uzbekistan was completed and passed all power generation tests on March 23.

The unit is now in the first 72 hours of trial operation which will immediately provide strong power support to the country's battle against the COVID-19 epidemic.

Its operation was proof that a design-focused enterprise could provide a full set of electromechanical equipment.

The renovation project is the first EPC project that Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA) has contracted in Uzbekistan.

Chengdu Engineering Corporation Limited of POWERCHINA was responsible for the design of the renovation and preparation of the full set of technical equipment.

Construction and engineering were shouldered by POWERCHINA's STECOL CORPORATION.

The project started in September 2018 and was scheduled to be completed within two years.

As several China-Uzbekistan flights were closed because of the COVID-19 epidemic many Chinese equipment manufacturers were not able to carry out on-site inspections or to adjust the facilities.

Therefore, POWERCHINA's builders and manufacturers used video calls to guarantee the progress of the renovation.

The renovation project is a clean energy program of Uzbekistan which will help reduce carbon dioxide emission and protect the environment in affected areas.

In addition, two of the hydropower plants are located at the load center of the country's capital city. The project will contribute to a stable power supply to meet municipal and civil needs when completed.
