First Thermal Power Plant in Bengkulu Starts Service

Updated: 2019-11-25

The first thermal power station in Bengkulu Province, Indonesia started operation on Nov 15.

Located in Bengkulu Province at the western coast of the island of Sumatra, the project included construction of two 100MW coal-fired generator units, a 150kV power transmission line, a coal unloading terminal, and supporting facilities.

Jointly invested and developed by POWERCHINA Resources Ltd., a subsidiary of Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA) and Intraco Penta (INTA) in Indonesia, the project started construction on Oct 25, 2016, and is expected to start commercial operation by Feb 25, 2020.

The plant will operate for 7,008 hours a year and produce about 1.4 billion kWh of power annually.

During construction, Chinese and Indonesian employees learned from and exchanged views with each other, which benefited the progress of the project.

To date, more than 2,000 jobs have been created and the purchase of engineering machinery and main materials has brought about $40 million of income to the region.

It is estimated that hundreds of positions will be offered to local people and nearly one million tons of coal are predicted to be purchased annually from the area when the project plant begins operation.

The project will be a driving force to the region's economic growth.

According to POWERCHINA, the plant was built with Chinese technologies and equipment and to Chinese standards.

The high-effect units adopted in construction helped reduce coal consumption and emissions of carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide. The advanced wastewater treatment system makes zero release of sewage possible which will maximize the protection of the local environment.

The station will be modern and green with a main engine control system integrated with a coal handling system and a high-end sprinkler for dust prevention.
