China sent its first high-speed transmission Earth remote sensing satellite, ZY-1-01, or CBERS-01, into orbit on Oct 14, 1999.
The satellite was jointly developed by the China Academy of Space Technology affiliated to China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation and the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais of Brazil.
It was the first Earth remote sensing satellite with multiple functions in China and an icon of South-South cooperation.
It was also proof that China's space remote sensing application had entered a new stage.
