5G System Offers Integrated Service for Passengers in New Airport

Updated: 2019-10-11

A 5G integrated service system for smart travel has been put into use at Beijing Daxing International Airport.

Developed by several enterprises including China Eastern Air Holding Company China Eastern(China Eastern), Huawei and China United Network Communications Group Co., Ltd. (China Unicom), the system sets a new standard for intelligence, contextualization and convenience of air service and provides passengers with a new smart travel experience.

The system made China Eastern the first airline to introduce 5G and AR technologies into civil aviation, the first to adopt a facial recognition system and the first to offer passive permanent electronic baggage tags in the world.

Passengers can purchase tickets, check in, check baggage, go through security checks and board aircraft through the facial recognition system.

A second identification, the check of the number of passengers and ushering passengers to their seats, are also available with the support of the facial identification system at departure gates, which makes service more accurate.

Flight information, departure gate, weather at the destination and routes to the gate as well as estimated required time for various procedures can be obtained by facial recognition machines in zones like China Eastern check-in areas, security checks and the airlines' VIP rooms.

The 5G integrated service network provides reminders for ticket issuing, checking-in, boarding, change of departure gate and luggage conveyor belt numbers. New services like reminders of the time required for going from the passenger's current position to the departure gate, luggage on board time, and luggage being delivered to the conveyors are additions to the previous service systems.

China Eastern is currently the only airline with its headquarters at the airport that offers a whole array of air services. It is now making efforts to use emerging technologies like 5G, AI and cloud technology to improve passengers' travel experience.

The integrated system at Daxing airport is a demonstration and will be promoted in another four airports in Beijing and Shanghai.
