Three Generations of Safety Helmets

Updated: 2019-09-24

Placed in the cabinet of Qiu Rixuan's house are three safety helmets which belong to three generations of his family.

Qiu works for the State Grid Information & Telecommunication Branch of State Grid Jiangxi Electric Power Co., Ltd. and both his father and grandfather worked in power supply companies.

Qiu said that the oldest safety helmet was a rattan-made one used in the 1980s. It belonged to his grandfather.

In 1976, Qiu's grandfather worked as an ordinary maintenance worker at Jiangxi Power Transmission and Transformation Construction Company. He wore the helmet every day at work, carrying insulating rods, pliers and a sickle.

According to Qiu, his grandfather never returned home with work unfinished. Whenever and wherever there was an electricity failure, he was always the first one to arrive at the site and the last one to leave.

Qiu recalled that his grandfather once told him, "I had never made great successes in my whole life but I'm always happy when I see every house is lit with power. You should guard the hard-won brightness."

The old plastic safety helmet belonged to Qiu's father.

Qiu said that his father entered the power supply bureau in western Jiangxi Province after graduating in 1989.

At that time, China's power grid construction had already developed rapidly and various kinds of domestic appliances were in use. Electricity had become a necessity for people.

To meet increasing power demands, more telegraph poles and thicker transmission lines were built and made. More transformers were installed in production and livelihood centers.

Various kinds of high-precision measuring instruments and detection devices were adopted by Qiu's father in his work.

Although the tools changed, Qiu's grandfather's spirit was still inherited by his father.

Qiu's mother recalled that on one autumn night in 1998, it was raining heavily with thunder and lightning. Qiu's father received an urgent repair mission and rushed to the site without hesitation with his telescope and equipment.

The stories of Qiu's father and grandfather made a great impact on Qiu and he decided to work for State Grid Jiangxi Electric Power Co., Ltd. after seven years of study at North China Electric Power University.

Qiu said "Every generation in the grid industry holds a dream. To my grandfather, bringing brightness to every house was his dream. He tried his best to ensure the power lines were working. To my father, safeguarding the security of devices and power stations was his dream. I will work harder to make the grid more intelligent and protect power information and communication systems as well as data security."

Maintenance of the high voltage lines, the 15,000-kilometer cable, the 151 sets of information systems, more than 2,000 hardware devices and 292 signal stations is now Qiu's responsibility and he said he will carry on the spirit of his grandfather and father by devoting himself to China's power industry.
