CSCEC Contributes to Sri Lanka's Development

Updated: 2019-08-21

Construction of the extension of the Southern Expressway in Sri Lanka has been completed and the Road Development Authority of Sri Lanka issued the submission certificate to China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), the contractor, on Aug 7.

Located in the country's Southern Province, the entire highway was separated into four sections for construction purposes. CSCEC is responsible for the second and third sections and the third was the first to be finished.

The total distance of the second section is 26 kilometers and the third is 15 kilometers. Construction of them started on Oct 28 and Jan 25, 2016, respectively.

The extension of the Southern Expressway is a result of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and CSCEC's first large-scale infrastructure program in the country.

The highway will greatly promote regional economic development and improve local residents' lives as well as vitalize local tourism when completed.

It will take only about two hours to drive from Colombo to Hambantota ports, half the current time, which will promote the flow of people and transportation of goods.

Hambantota has been listed as a key to the national strategic development of Sri Lanka. The highway will be an indispensable infrastructure for the region and its development into the economic center of South Asia.

The project has provided more than 20,000 jobs for local people and offered training for management talents.

For example, CSCEC established a safety education demonstration and professional skill training base and made bilingual training materials in English and Sinhala.

The company also positively cooperated with local enterprises such as construction material suppliers, mechanical equipment rental companies, special sub-contractors and local labor service distributors, meeting the needs for construction and supporting local companies' development in a win-win outcome.

Holding culture exchange activities and fulfilling social responsibilities also played important roles in deepening the two people's friendship.

On the Qixi Festival, or Chinese Valentine's Day, 19 couples from China and Sri Lanka held a mass marriage, which became a hot topic.

CSCEC's staff members also visited schools, nursing homes, hospitals and temples to get closer to local people.

In addition, the company also has its own voluntary teams and has organized nearly 100 public service activities such as charity clinics. CSCEC's workers even took part in fighting against floods.

CSCEC has donated more than 1.5 million rupees ($21,044.95) for charity and about two million rupees for goods and materials to benefit over 5,000 people.
