CNOOC’s Tianjin Station Welcomes Its First Shipment of Yamal-produced LNG

Updated: 2019-08-20

Seventy thousand tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) were unloaded from VLADIMIR RUSANOV, a Russian LNG tanker, at the Tianjin LNG accepting station of CNOOC Gas and Power Group, a subsidiary of China National Offshore Oil Corporation's (CNOOC), on Aug 6.

It was the first time the station had received Russian-produced LNG from the Yamal LNG project and the vessel was the first coming from the Arctic Circle to berth there.

The vessel set off from Yamal port after loading, crossed the Arctic and the Bering Strait and on June 29 arrived at the Nanjiang Port after an 8,000-kilometer voyage.

Located within the Arctic Circle in Russia, the Yamal LNG project is the largest to develop the energy in the arctic region worldwide and a result of China-Russia energy cooperation.

It is also an example for CNOOC's future international development.

Ice decay on the Arctic shipping route in summer makes it possible for the tanker to navigate through the "Ice Silk Road".

Travel range and time through the "Ice Silk Road" has been shortened by 60 percent and nearly 20 days respectively compared to the traditional LNG transportation course through the Suez Canal, which greatly lowers LNG importing costs and improves transportation efficiency.

Energy cooperation is essential to the comprehensive and coordinated strategic partnership for the new era between China and Russia.

It is also significant in strengthening China's clean energy supply foundation and promoting its energy structure.

According to the company, Russia is to provide China with at least four million tons of LNG annually through the "Ice Silk Road", making it one of China's major suppliers of crude oil and LNG.
