Updated: 2019-04-11

Projects of China Southern Power Grid (CSG) were recently put into production as part of its push to promote the reliability and safety of the power supply to Macao.

The projects include the 220 kV station from Fenghuang to Gongbei port, and the third 110 kV main substation at the Cuixiang station in Zhuhai.

In 2017, CSG's Zhuhai Power Supply Bureau started the Zhuhai power supply project to complete reconstruction after Super Typhoon Hato.

The project incorporates 28 items at three phases and is expected to be completed by 2020.

Of the 28 items, 15 involve infrastructure construction, four are in preparation, four have been put into production and four are under construction.

The project aims at ensuring uninterrupted power supply for Macao and Zhuhai if they are hit by a typhoon, and that power restoration if necessary will be speedy, local officials said.

In June 2018, parts of the project were finished, including the second circuit from Zhuhai to Gongbei port and the double circuit line between Jialin and Zhuhai, realizing the goal of building an intact 220 kV power supply route from Zhuhai to Macao.

This year, the third power-transmission route, the 220kV double cable from Yandun to Beian, is expected to be completed.

"This is a key project concerning power distribution reliability in Macao, recognizing electricity needs and those of social economic development," said Xiong Zhiwei, an official of the project management center of the Zhuhai Power Supply Bureau.

After completion, power supply of Zhuhai to Macao will become a major system with eight 220 kV cables, Xiong said.

The third power-transmission route was designed as double 220 kV cables. It is about 10.75 kilometers long, with 5.75 kilometers crossing waterways including Maliuzou, Huijin bay and the cross gate.

At present, 85 percent of the project has been completed, according to the bureau.

In addition, the bureau will establish a 220 kV Diequan substation in preparation for the upcoming typhoon season this year.

By 2020, the Zhuhai grid will replace 220 kV substation at Nanping Station and Fenghuang Station in the central urban area with indoor substations. It will lower all 110 kV overhead lines to the ground and realize full 110 kV cable power supply in the main urban area of Xiangzhou, according to its plan.

The city also plans to complete all of its wind-proof reinforcement and transformation of 220 and 110 kV overhead lines to further enhance the safety of urban power supply.
