CTG's Generator Set in Brazil Reaches 500,000-hour Service Goal

Updated: 2019-04-09

The second generator set at the Salto Grande Hydropower Plant operated by China Three Gorges Corporation Brasil (CTG Brasil) has been in service for 500,000 hours, and is the first generator set affiliated to the company to reach that performance goal.

The second generator set went into service on Feb 9, 1959, with installed capacity of 18.45 megawatts. The set was being upgraded and modernized from August 2002 to April 2003.

The Salto Grande Hydropower Plant has the longest history among CTG Brasil's power stations and is the oldest of CTG's hydropower stations at home and abroad.

The station has been in service for more than 60 years. The gross installed capacity of its four generators is 73.8 megawatts.

The plant, located at the border of São Paulo state's Salto and Paraná state's Cambará, is built over the Paranapanema River in southeastern Brazil.

In October 2016, CTG acquired the Brazilian operations of Duke Energy with 100 percent of its shares, and obtained a controlling interest in 10 hydropower stations including the Salto Grande Hydropower Plant.

Besides secure operations, environmental protection is also a highlight of the plant, particularly as regards fish protection.

A breeding center for fish in reservoir areas has been in place since the early 1970s.

In recent years, CTG Brasil has released 3.6 million fries annually in the Paranapanema River and the Paraná River. All were bred in the breeding center.
