A second power generation project for the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) will be completed by June 30, according to China South Power Grid (CSG). The power generation will improve reliability of the power system for FAST's operation.

Electricity will be transmitted from the 35 KV Tangbian Transformer Substation, and will run 16.2 kilometers to the FAST dedicated substation when it is completed.

A total of 10.59 million yuan ($1.58 million) was invested in the second power generation project.

Guaranteeing stable and reliable power supply to FAST has been a big concern for CSG. Almost 40 million yuan has been invested for the construction of supporting facilities such as a 110 KV transformed substation and the 35 KV power transmission lines.

Pan Jun, deputy-director of the radio astronomy observatory of the National Astronomical Observatories of CAS explained that as FAST has a high requirement for power supply, outages greatly impact its operation.

FAST is to be tested soon and will be into use upon acceptance. The second power generation is intended to provide it with a stronger and more reliable power supply.

The company also established a special group to assure security of the power supply.
