Updated: 2018-11-30

The first socket for the gigawatts units of Baihetan Hydrogen Station, a targeted design by Dongfang Electric Cooperation (DEC), was put into position in an underground plant on Nov 24, another step towards completion of the large units of the hydrogen station.

Baihetan Hydrogen Station, located at Ningnan county, Southwest China's Sichuan province, and Qiaojia county, Yunnan province, will have 16 units each with a one million kW capacity. The hydrogen plant is the world's largest and its capacity is the second largest in the world. It is another milestone in global hydrogen power station construction.

All eight hydro turbine generator units and related facilities were designed and made by DEC. Both the units' size and voltage are the world's largest.

After operation, the station will effectively improve China's energy structure and air quality by an annual reduction of standard coal use of about 19.68 million tons, which will mean cuts to emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and oxynitride of 51.6 million tons, 170,000 tons and 150,000 tons respectively.

The construction project will improve the overall level of China's equipment manufacturing technologies and boost industrial upgrades to form an extensive industrial chain.
